Lettered Edition Details

Limited to 26 copies

Trimmed page size – 300 x 200 mm

Signed by Leslie Gerry and Mike Flanagan

Text printed letterpress on 200gsm Somerset Velvet mould-made paper by Phil Abel and Robert Hetherington of Hand and Eye Letterpress. Printed in black, with blue titles and spots in red, using photopolymer plates on a Heidelberg cylinder press.

This edition is vividly illustrated by our friend, the award-winning illustrator, printer and publisher, Leslie Gerry. It features 21 full-page colour illustrations, including:

  • 18 single page images
  • 1 triple page fold-out
  • 2 double page images tipped onto tabs
  • 1 colour spot illustration

All illustrations are printed as giclées by the artist on his twelve-colour, wide-format printer using heavyweight mould-made paper. The sheets are painstakingly fed through by hand, one at a time, with Leslie able to print about five full books a day.

The Lettered edition is bound as a full leather bradel binding. The spine is covered with a light tan Harmatan goatskin, with the front and back boards covered in a blue cowskin which has been giclée printed in two layers, giving the design a slightly raised effect. The book is protected by a foil blocked, buckram covered chemise, lined with suedel.

The book and chemise are housed in a half bound lambskin covered solander box with Suminagashi marbled face papers.

Additionally, this book comes with an oversized portfolio with ribbon ties, which is presented separately from the box. The portfolio contains 8 x colour prints on Bockingford all signed by the artist and measuring 420 x 315 mm. The portfolio contains an illustration not used in the book and exclusive to this edition.

Please be aware that there may be minor alterations to the design as we enter the production stage.

Lettered Edition Pre-Order Details

This edition is limited to 26 copies. All copies will first be offered privately to current Lyra’s Press rights holders (those who are the registered Lettered edition rights holders of The Alchemist).

Rights holders will be contacted on Monday the 17th of November and will have until Thursday the 20th of November to make their purchase. Any copies not taken up by current rights holders will be available by lottery ONLY.

The lottery form will be open on this page from Friday the 21st of November until Sunday the 23rd of November.

Winners will be notified by email and sent a payment link on Monday the 24th of November. The option to purchase will be in place for 24 hours from the timestamp of the notification email, after which any non-purchased copies will be offered to someone else.

There is a ‘one entry per household’ rule in place for the lottery for this edition. We ask that you please respect this rule so that everyone has a fair and equal chance. If we find multiple entries, they will be deleted and you will be banned from the lottery for this edition.

If we fail to sell all copies through the lottery, these copies will become available on the website shortly afterwards and you will be able to purchase directly through the shop page. All purchase limits will then be removed.

Click here to see our rules around the lotteries on our FAQ page.

You may also enter the lottery for the Numbered edition.

We accept payments via PayPal, Stripe (credit card), Wise and direct bank transfer (if in the UK).

Lettered Edition Delivery Details

The cost of shipping is £25 in the UK and £55 for the rest of the world. The shipping cost is based on custom made boxes with foam, packing and booking time as well as the cost of the courier service.

All books will be packed into custom made, double walled cartons and surrounded by thick foam on six sides to ensure safe delivery.

Deliveries within the UK will be sent via a 48 hour courier. Delivery times elsewhere in the world will vary depending on your location, but we expect that the books will largely be delivered within a few days, at most. All services will be fully trackable and you will be sent a confirmation of shipping along with a tracking number when your parcel is booked with the courier. If you have a preferred courier service then do let us know and we will try our best to use them if they are available.

All international deliveries, including to the EU, now have full customs declarations. Any import taxes, customs duties or fees must be paid for by the recipient. Customs policies vary from country to country and you should contact your local customs office for more information. Customs clearance procedures may cause delays and extend our quoted delivery time estimates, for which we cannot be liable.

Note for US Buyers: We are based in the UK. From August 29, 2025, all UK-origin shipments to the United States are subject to customs processing. Printed books remain duty-free under US law, but some states may charge sales tax or handling fees on delivery. Please be aware that delivery times may be slightly longer due to customs clearance. We clearly label the parcels as ‘Books/Printed Matter’ along with the customs code.

Please note – we cannot deliver to PO Box addresses.

We expect to have the books finished and ready to ship in Q1 of 2026.
