Don’t Look Now – Lyra’s Press

Hi everyone,

As many of you already know, we announced our next Lyra’s Press title a couple of weeks ago, and now it’s time to share the full details. Below you’ll find a brief overview of what you can expect, including edition information and when the book will be available to order. You can visit our Publishing Page and our Shop Page for more details. The important sales dates are at the end of this news post.

LYRA’S PRESS

Don’t Look Now by Daphne du Maurier

Set amid the shadowy beauty of Venice, Daphne Du Maurier’s Don’t Look Now is an atmospheric exploration of love, loss, and the uncanny. John and Laura, still grieving the death of their young daughter Christine, travel to Italy in the hope of finding peace. Their fragile calm is shattered when they cross paths with two elderly sisters – one of whom claims to be psychic and insists she can see Christine’s spirit. The message she delivers is dire: they must leave Venice at once or face terrible danger. Dismissing the warning as superstition, John tries to move on, but strange events and an increasing sense of dread lead the story to its disturbing and unforgettable finale.

For this project we have teamed up with our good friend Leslie Gerry, who is known for his extraordinary handmade books and award-winning artistry. Leslie has created eighteen full-page colour paintings, two double page spreads, and one triple page fold-out for our edition. To showcase Leslie’s striking artwork at its best, we’ve chosen a larger page size than usual.

We have also enlisted writer and filmmaker Mike Flanagan to write a short afterword for this title. Mike and Leslie will be signing both editions.

Phil and Rob at Hand and Eye have already completed the letterpress printing, and the printed sheets are now with us in the bindery, ready to be cut and folded. I’ll be working alongside Ludlow Bookbinders to hand-bind each edition.

THE BINDINGS

Don’t Look Now is presented in two editions: the Lettered and the Numbered.

The Lettered edition is limited to 26 copies and is bound in full leather bradel style, with a Harmatan goatskin spine and giclée printed cowskin boards. Each book is encased in a buckram covered chemise and presented in a half-bound, lambskin solander box with Suminagashi sides. An oversized portfolio containing eight signed prints accompanies the set. All copies are signed by the artist and afterword contributor.

As always, rights holders will be contacted first and will have the opportunity to purchase their copy before the books go on sale. Any copies not taken by current rights holders will be available by lottery only.

The Numbered edition is limited to 275 copies and is bradel bound with a red goatskin leather spine and Suminagashi marbled boards. Each book has a foil blocked leather label to the front board and comes housed in a cloth covered solander box. All copies are signed by the artist and afterword contributor.

Copies numbered 1 – 150 are reserved for current Lyra’s Press rights holders, who will be contacted first. The remaining 125 copies, plus any not taken by rights holders, will be available by lottery only.

We are offering 50 new rights copies with this sale, bringing the total rights numbers for the Numbered edition to 200.

Please visit the Publishing Page and our Shop Page for more information on the editions.

THE SALE

Current Lyra’s Press rights holders will be contacted first regarding both editions (see dates below). These are the customers who have rights carried forward from the sale of The Alchemist.

  • Rights holders have the option to purchase all 26 Lettered edition copies.
  • Rights holders have the option to purchase the first 150 copies of the Numbered edition (numbers 1-150).
  • There will be a further 125 copies of the Numbered edition available for general sale, 50 of which will carry rights to future Lyra’s Press titles.

Lotteries will be held for any Lettered copies that become available, as well as for any available rights copies (1-200) and non-rights copies (201-275) of the Numbered edition. If you are successful in the Numbered edition lottery, you will be informed whether your copy carries rights to the next title before you make your purchase. If there are any remaining copies after the lotteries, they will be made available for purchase directly through the website.

Please note there is a limit of one copy per household, per edition. You may purchase both the Lettered and Numbered editions if available.

Please visit the FAQ page for more info on how the rights system works across both of our imprints.
